Take a read below of a poem, written by Nicola James:

Neurodiversity spice

I wish I could hear the beats in words

I wish I could proof read every verse

I wish I could easily get an A grade

Instead of having my work covered with shade

I wish I could stand tall and proud

Instead of day dreaming in the clouds

No one really knows my creativity

Because intelligence is measured by a system ladened in educational bureaucracy

If only I could draw mind-maps in exams

And submit drawings and creative plans

Rather than having to follow this linear prose

Which causes me to get lost and struggle to compose

I feel so much shame

That I am not the same

As the so called intelligent kids

Who write an essay in a night

Without having to really fight

To get those words into their head

As one struggles to carry on but one’s brain is dead

Dead of trying to work in a way that does not naturally suit

This mind of inspiration hungry so hungry for a creative pursuit

Physical, kinaesthetic, visual that’s the tickets

Chatting, debating dreaming  and being ready to score that wicket

I am going to show them, they will see,

That once I step out into this big wide world in front of me

I will design a life and a system of success that aligns with the way I naturally like to be

It might be hard and require courage

But I have buckets loads of that

After being told constantly that I will never make it out of school fully intact

Like the kids who get the A’s

And all of that praise

Please remember everyone has a gift

and they might not all be the same

But praising individuality will keep them on their game

Helping the world to embrace talent

So we don’t end up all programmed the same
